The retailer Marshall Field established his Marshall Field and Company store in Chicago, Illinois, after his partner retired in 1881. The store eventually moved to its famous 12-story location, which later became a landmark. In 1990, the Target Corporation bought the store and gave the Marshall Fields name to 61 of its other stores. The May Department Stores Company purchased all Marshall Fields stores in 2004, then sold all of its stores to Federated Department Stores in 2005.
