Until 2015, it is possible to complete an X-ray technician certificate program in as little as six months. However, beginning in 2015, X-ray technicians are required to obtain an Associate's degree to be nationally certified, which takes 18 months to two years to complete.
To be eligible for national certification, X-ray techs are required to show competence in certain medical procedures within three years of earning an associate’s degree, or five years if they graduated prior to 2013. They must also complete the educational requirements and pass a certification exam. Technicians who are AART certified may have the test waived. Licensing and/or certification is required to become an X-ray technician in most states.
