It takes at least 12 years to become an anesthesiologist. Based upon information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an anesthesiologist is a physician that administers pain and sedation medication during medical procedures.
Anesthesiologists are highly trained physicians and are responsible for the safety of the patient before, during and after surgery. According to the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the requirements to become licensed in anesthesiology include 4 four years of undergraduate study, 4 years of medical school and a 4 year residency. After completing the residency, further training may be obtained through a fellowship. This allows aspiring doctors to practice a specialty of anesthesiology, including pediatric, obstetric or cardiac anesthesiology.
