Manufacturers Casio and SAM4S produce square-shaped cash registers. The San Francisco-based start-up company Square produces the Square Register app that downloads onto an iPad. A Square Stand supports the iPad and forms an integrated point-of-sale system that takes card payments, links to a cash drawer and prints or emails receipts.
Businesses can also download the Square Register app onto a smartphone and use it with a range of mobile contactless, chip and magstripe card readers to take payments on the go. The system can open a number of different tickets in a restaurant and offer customers an easy way to pay tips by suggesting a choice of preset percentages and dollars on screen or paper. The system can also manage an inventory and supply daily emails containing stock alerts when supplies become low.
