Security guard training regulations and test times vary from state to state and between companies. It is common for states to have standardized licensing procedures.
For example, California requires 40 hours of training and testing in the first six months of security work. New York requires 24 hours of training in the first year with eight hours in subsequent years and more extensive requirements for armed guards. Most states require license renewal every year or two.
The four largest security companies are Allied Barton, ADT, Securitas and G4S. Employee reviews and discussion of training and testing procedures are available on GlassDoor.com. Topics covered on security guard tests include patrolling techniques, firearm use, emergency practices and basic guard procedures.
