Rite Aid has been in business since 1962. The first store opened as Thift D Discount Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Within 10 years of the first store, the company grew to 267 locations in 10 states. The business name changed to Rite Aid Corporation in 1968.
The company passed $1 billion in sales for the first time in 1983. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1987 and became the largest drug store chain in terms of store count by reaching over 2,000 stores. As of 2015, Rite Aid is the third-largest drug store chain the United States. It boasts approximately 4,600 stores and employs 89,000 associates.
