Inspection certificates for motor vehicles in Maryland are valid for 90 days from the date of issue. During the inspection, the car's brakes, steering, exhaust, lights, safety belts and other components are checked.
Depending on the vehicle type, a car inspection takes one to one and a half hours. Unlike most states, there are only two situations in which a Maryland driver needs to have his car inspected. When a car is registered in another state and the driver has just moved to Maryland, he has 60 days to register the vehicle. Similarly, if a person buys or inherits a used vehicle, he needs to obtain a certificate. It is issued by the Motor Vehicle Administration of the Maryland Department of Transportation.
