While funds from debit card payments are immediately removed, the amount of time it takes for the transaction to be posted on the bank ledger ranges from one day to several days. The length of time ultimately depends on whether the purchase is run as a debit or credit.
Debit purchases requiring the customer to enter a PIN number typically post within 24 hours. However, if the debit card is swiped as a credit purchase, which may or may not require a signature, the transaction may not post for a couple of days. In some instances, such as with restaurant purchases and fuel pump pre-authorizations, the transaction may not post for several days until the merchant processes the payment to reflect gratuity or the total amount of the fuel purchase.
