According to About.com, most LVN programs take a year to complete. LVN programs include classroom work and hands-on training. Upon completion of an LVN program, one must pass the NCLEX-PN exam to obtain an LVN license.

Generally, LVN programs cover a variety of subjects related to the medical field, such as biology, pharmacology and basic biology, according to Inner Body. Students must also work in a medical setting, such as a hospital or clinic, to gain hands-on experience during the LVN program. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, additional training is available for LVNs who wish to specialize in specific areas, such as IV therapy.
