The amount of time it takes to get an auction license varies by state. Some states do not have licensing requirements, while others require extensive training and bonding in addition to a license.
States that do not require auction licenses include Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut and Iowa. However, some cities within these states do require a license. The District of Columbia does not require a license, but charges a licensing fee.
Other states, such as Pennsylvania, have more complex requirements. To obtain an auction license in Pennsylvania, applicants must complete a training course at one of three approved institutions, and then pass an exam. Alternately, applicants may complete a two-year apprenticeship under a licensed mentor. After running 30 auctions as an apprentice, the applicant may take the licensing exam.
