What Is a Logistics Specialist?

Logistics specialists manage the flow of materials, equipment or supplies from the point of origin to the point of consumption to satisfy requirements of a business or organization. With physical items, the job may include coordination of information flow, material handling, production, packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing and security.

A logistics specialist may manage abstract items, such as time, information, particles and energy as well as physical items. The logistics specialist (LS) is a U.S. Navy enlisted rating. These service members maintain ship or company military supply stores. Their responsibilities include the purchasing, procurement, shipping, receiving and issuing of equipment, tools and consumable items. They issue repair parts for ships and aircraft and keep a database of inventory, orders and financial information.
