The original hardware company was founded by four Traskos brothers in 1946 in Dearborn, Michigan. In 1959, the brothers opened three more stores, which were named ACE Budget centers. The company was known as A.C.E. Inc. and had 13 stores in Michigan by 1967. The growing chain built a 60,000-square-foot warehouse in Redford in 1969, then a 189,000-square foot center in Farmington Hills to accommodate 63 stores in 1987.
In 1981, with 36 stores in the chain, Theodore Traskos changed the name of the company to ACO Hardware. In January 2014, ACO Hardware affiliated with the Ace Hardware chain and changed its name to Great Lakes Ace Hardware. The company headquarters in Farmington Hills.
