J.R. Watkins began operations in 1868 in Plainview, Minnesota as an all-natural apothecary. The company used door-to-door salespeople who sold the line of natural and environmentally-friendly products to homemakers. By the 1940s, J.R. Watkins had an estimated 5,000 salespeople. As of 2015, that number is estimated to be 25,000.
The current J.R. Watkins line includes health-related items such as pain relief and cough/cold medicine; personal care products including soaps and lotions; household cleaning products such as laundry and dish soap; and a line of herbs and spices, oils, extracts and seasoning blends. While J.R. Watkins still employs home-based business consultants, the company's products are also available for purchase online and in select retail stores such as Wal-Mart, Target, Pick 'n' Save and Whole Foods.
In 2002, the life of J.R. Watkins salesperson Bill Porter was documented in the movie "Door to Door." Porter was one of the company's most successful salespeople for more than 50 years, despite cerebral palsy that severely limited his ability to walk.
