Every state has laws on the books regarding the ability of an individual to make their own decisions about medical care before the person needs medical treatment, says Find Law. Many states allow for patients to write a living will that outlines the type of medical care they wish to receive, and the duration of said care.
Most people draft a living will when they want to ensure their specific wishes are carried out, when they face the possibility of hospitalization or a complex medical procedure, when they want to create estate plans, or when they have been diagnosed with terminal medical conditions, notes Rocket Lawyer. The person writing the living will chooses an individual to act as the writer's agent, someone who ensures the wishes of the writer are fully carried out. The agent must be over the age of 18 and someone who the writer trusts to act in accordance with the writer's wishes.Learn more about Financial Planning
