John Hancock is one of the oldest life insurance providers. The company, founded in 1862, is still headquartered in Boston. Hancock offers a complete line of insurance products as well as mutual funds and college savings plans. Frankenmuth is represented by more than 500 independent insurance agencies in 15 states and has been in business for more than 145 years. The company boasts $1 billion in assets and an A.M. Best rating of "A." Even though Allstate offers a limited number of life insurance products, the company is convenient for customers who already have other insurance policies with the company. MetLife is one of the largest insurance companies in the world with more than 90 million customers in over 60 countries. They offer a wide range of policies, including auto, dental and disability. Prudential, a Fortune 500 company offering life insurance, annuities and investments to consumers, began selling insurance in 1875.
The criteria used by Consumer Affairs to determine the list include company stability, a good variety of policies to choose from and excellent customer service. Offering additional services such as mutual funds or annuities, and the availability of online tools such as insurance calculators and online policy management was also considered.
