Kaiser Permanente, which is the largest managed health care organization in the United States, operates in the District of Columbia and eight states. The organization's largest presence is in the state of California, where 40 percent of residents with health insurance are covered by Kaiser Permanente. Henry Kaiser and Dr. Sidney Garfield founded the organization in 1945. Kaiser Foundation hospitals, the Kaiser Foundation health plan and Permanente medical groups make up the Kaiser Permanente organization.
