A list of board-certified doctors is available through CertificationMatters.org, a database and search engine maintained by the American Board of Medical Specialities. It is also possible to check board certification for some doctors through ABPSVerify.org or by posting an inquiry to the medical licensing board for a specific state, as of 2015.
The American Board of Medical Specialties works closely with numerous medical certification boards and organizations to create and maintain standards for communication about certification to patients. Its site, ABMS.org, offers patients and consumers a wide array of resources to learn about the importance of board certification and how to identify doctors within the program. The Verify Certification page of the site explains the requirements for displaying certification from different organizations and the contact information for each group so that patients can make individual inquires. It also links to its certification search site, Certificationmatters.org, so that patients can conduct their own searches.
The site also contains a search tool that lets users enter a doctor's name, specialty and the city, state and ZIP code in which he practices. Results contain all doctors with matching information that have current certification from one of the ABMS's officially recognized organizations. ABPSVerify.org contains a similar tool that checks for a doctor's name and location in its certification records.
