IntelliShop, Sinclair Customer Metrics, BestMark and A Closer Look are a few legitimate mystery shopping companies. The Mystery Shopping Providers Association provides a list of legitimate companies as a reference.
While many mystery shopping companies provide legitimate opportunities, other companies are scams. Potential signs of a mystery shopping scam include requiring a payment to become a shopper or asking shoppers to wire money. Scam companies may also advertise in job classifieds or guarantee work. Legitimate companies often use mystery shoppers as independent contractors and don't guarantee mystery shopping jobs on a regular basis. Before signing up to mystery shop for a company, the person should check the MSPA and check with the Federal Trade Commission or the state Attorney General to look for complaints.
