Menards is a home improvement store that sells tools, building materials, fixtures and other merchandise for almost any home improvement project, as of 2015. Stores carry a variety of appliances, bath and kitchen fixtures, HVAC and plumbing supplies, and paint and siding. It also stocks doors and windows.
Menards got its start as a company that fabricated and constructed low-cost farm outbuildings in the Midwest. After customers began asking to purchase materials for their own use, owner John Menard realized the potential for a building supply outlet. At first, Menards only sold raw materials on a cash-and-carry basis, but it quickly expanded into fixtures and tools. Eventually, the company began opening retail stores with a comprehensive line of building and home improvement products, retiring its own construction business in 1994.
Menards stores carry a wide variety of products, with options suited to both experienced DIYers and first-time homeowners. Many locations also feature extensive lawn and garden sections, with seedling plants available in season for landscaping. Some also feature self-service lumberyards that allow customers to select from a wide variety of wood products and have pieces cut to their own specifications, reducing the amount of trimming and adjusting needed to put together a final project.
