People who have a certificate in surgical technology can get a job as a surgical technologist, also called an operating room technician. Such technologists participate on health care teams where they help prepare operating rooms for surgery, ensure supply levels, and wash and assist surgeons during operations.
Surgical technologists must handle stress well, be dexterous, ethical and detail-oriented. According to May 2012 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for a surgical technologist is $41,790. Certification and post-secondary programs are available at community colleges, vocational schools, hospitals and four-year colleges. Applicants usually must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
