Joseph A. Hardy III is the founder and CEO of 84 Lumber Company the largest privately owned building materials supplier that supplies to professional contractors. He is also the founder of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, a premiere resort destination in Fayette County south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Additionally, from 2004 to 2007, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Fayette County.
Born on January 6, 1923, Hardy earned his degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Following graduation he joined his family's jewelry business Hardy and Hayes Jewelers. He branched out to form his own business when he was 31 years old and formed Green Hills Lumber, which supplied building materials. He joined his two younger brothers and purchased land in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, and in 1956 started a "cash and carry" lumber yard, 84 Lumber. This yard catered to professional contractors working in the Southwestern Pennsylvania, Southeastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia regions.
Hardy's Nemacolin Woodlands Resort opened in 1987 and features Mystic Rock golf course, five-star hotel and spa accommodations. The resort's restaurant Lautrec won the AAA Five-Diamond Award and the Forbes Fifth Star award.
Hardy had five children with his first wife, Dorothy, two daughters with his second wife Debra and currently has an adopted son with his fourth wife, Jodi Santella Williams.
