The basic duties of a garbage collector include operating the garbage truck or riding on it, collecting and disposing of waste into truck and returning waste bins to owners. A garbage collector may also be required to drive a forklift at times and be able to operate a street-sweeping machine. In the United States, this occupation earns around $30,000 to $40,000 a year, as of 2013.
