What Is Janitorial School?

Janitorial schools provide training in the tasks required of janitors and custodians, such as cleaning and waxing floors, washing windows, and safely disposing of waste. Training also covers the safe and the proper use of cleaning agents and janitorial equipment and usually includes on-the-job skills practice.

Janitorial training programs may be offered by nonprofit agencies such as the Urban League and schools such as the Cleaning Management Institute, which offers training and certification for custodial supervisors and technicians. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, formal training is not required to become a janitor and most learn the skills on-the-job.
