The IRS requires taxpayers to use the Where's My Refund online tool to check their refund status prior to contacting the agency by phone, according to its website. Taxpayers must also wait at least 21 days after filing electronically or six weeks after filing by mail before inquiring.
If directed by the Where's My Refund tool to contact the agency for further information, a taxpayer may find the IRS telephone assistance numbers for individuals, businesses and other entities on its website. The IRS also provides dedicated lines for tax practitioners calling on behalf of clients as well as for those with hearing impairments. Individuals should have their Social Security number or taxpayer ID number on hand when calling and should be aware of their filing status and the amount owed to them as a tax refund, according to the U.S. Tax Center.
