The IRS does not directly provide taxpayers with a tax bracket calculator. However, this service is available online from many other sites, including TaxAct.com and IRSCalculators.com.
The online tax bracket calculator at TaxAct.com allows an individual to enter his taxable income and filing status, which is typically either single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household. Then, the calculator returns the taxpayer's total tax burden as well as his tax bracket and effective tax rate, which is the overall tax rate determined as a percentage of income. Some other services, such as those at IRSCalculators.com, allow an individual to also determine his state tax burden. This allows a taxpayer to see his overall effective tax rate.
