Active and retired military service members and certain family members are eligible for TRICARE insurance. Military spouses are able to qualify for TRICARE benefits, as well as, unmarried children under a certain age. Those not eligible for TRICARE are parents and family members eligible for CHAMPVA coverage. TRICARE eligibility is also extended to people age 65 and over who receive Medicare. CHAMPVA insurance is for dependents or survivors of military veterans, and individuals seeking to enroll can contact the local Veteran's Benefit Administration office, or veteran's center. CHAMPVA coverage approval depends upon the military status of the veteran. Eligibility criteria is based on Veteran's Administration disability ratings such as a permanent disability related to military service. Surviving spouses who remarry before age 55 are not eligible unless the remarriage ends due to death or divorce.
