Completely fill out the rent receipt as this is important for legal purposes. Writing the date of payment allows the landlord or the tenant to provide evidence of the day of payment in court should a legal dispute arise. Keep track of which tenants have paid and which have not by including the full address of the rental property, including apartment numbers and the tenants' names. Always sign a receipt as proof that the tenant's payment was received. Include a signature line with your full name, title and company, if applicable, to prove that you are responsible for rent collection.
There are standard forms that many landlords use as rent receipts, as well as books of receipt sheets with carbon paper for copies. Receipt templates are also available for download online or through word processing software. Customized templates can be created on software such as Word, Pages or Google Docs. Each receipt should have two copies, one for the landlord and one for the tenant.
