An HVAC engineer's job is to design, install, maintain and repair heating and cooling systems. HVAC engineering is a subcategory of mechanical engineering and usually involves working on heating and air systems, as well as designing them for new construction to meet the needs of clients.

Someone who works in HVAC engineering can work in the residential, industrial, commercial or institutional fields. These types of engineers can work as subcontractors, with contractors and architects, design firms or even sales offices. These jobs normally require a bachelor's degree in HVAC engineering technology, mechanical or architectural engineering. This can be through a traditional 4-year college or a vocational college.
