The Hulbert Financial Digest does not provide rankings of investments; instead, it provides rankings of stock and mutual fund newsletters, according to MarketWatch. The Hulbert Financial Digest tracks the performance of more than 180 of these newsletters, which recommend over 500 portfolios.
The Hulbert Digest came into being when Mark Hulbert attended an investment seminar in 1979 and heard newsletter editors making unsubstantiated claims that their recommendations increased their readers' money significantly each year, states MarketWatch. After following a number of the newsletters, Hulbert found many of them exaggerated their track records. He established the Hulbert Financial Digest to help investors select newsletters that consistently provide sound investment advice. Investors can view newsletters' track records as far back as 1980.
