The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, accepts applications for housing throughout the year. People interested in applying for housing should contact their local housing agency or local HUD field office. Applications must be in writing and the housing agency an assist applicants with eligibility requirements.
HUD's public housing program assists low-income families with obtaining affordable housing. As of March 2015, HUD assists approximately 3,300 local housing agencies by providing federal aid for public housing. A family's eligibility for public housing is based on whether the annual gross income is within the established income limits set by HUD. Income limits can vary by location, so a family can be ineligible in one area but eligible in another.
