When hosting a community yard sale, get plenty of help, and get the word out early. Organize and set up ahead of time to allow for a good layout of items.
The layout of items is one of the most important factors. Make sure to organize everything by category so people can go directly to the items that interest them. Put kitchen items together, bathroom items together, linens together and kid’s toys together. Keep the most valuable or favorable items near the front of the yard, close to the street. Items such as furniture and appliances tend to entice passing pedestrians and drivers.
Add some ambiance by putting on light music and turning on some twinkle lights. Have a table with beverages and light snacks, such as cookies and lemonade or fresh coffee. This often attracts more people and keeps them around for a while so they can keep browsing. Make sure there is enough change on hand, including plenty of coins and small bills. Larger bills are also good in case someone decides to pay with a larger bill.
Open the garage sale early on Saturday, as that is the most popular yard sale day of the week. It should open around 6 or 7 a.m. and go until 4 or 5 p.m.
