Homer Laughlin is not based in China. According to the company's website, Homer it is a privately held company whose headquarters are located in Newell, West Virginia.
The company was founded in Ohio in 1871 by brothers Shakespeare and Homer Laughlin. Shakespeare left the company in 1879, but in 1889 Homer Laughlin found a new partner, William Edwin Wells, and the two incorporated the company in 1896. A short time thereafter, Homer sold his rights in the company to Wells. The word "China" in the Homer Laughlin China Company is a reference to the fact that the company primarily sells dinnerware or "china" as it is commonly known.
