Coogi is an urban fashion label that produces colorful knitwear. The clothing line is famous for its use of vibrant colors, eclectic patterns and strange textures. The company was founded in 1969 by Jacky Taranto as Cuggi in Melbourne, Australia but renamed to Coogi in 1987. The company sells colorful sweaters and has also expanded to producing and selling women's clothing and everything from jeans to bathing suits. In 2001, Taranto sold Coogi to U.S. investor Norman Weisfeld.
The Coogi brand was famous in the 1990s thanks to the American hip-hop scene. The late African American rapper Notorious B.I.G. referenced the colorful sweaters in some of his famous rap songs. The clothing line was then endorsed and worn by famous black entertainers such as Jay Z and Russell Simmons. Coogi also gained notoriety thanks to African American comedian Bill Cosby. Cosby made the sweaters extremely popular by wearing them on the long-running series "The Cosby Show." The sweaters are often called "Cosby sweaters" because of how synonymous the colorful sweaters are with his image.
Although the Coogi brand lost its sparkle in the early 2000s, the brand's executive director Willie Esco is striving to make a comeback as of 2015. Celebrities such as ASAP Rocky and Drake have been spotted wearing these colorful sweaters. Coogi products can be purchased from the company's online store, shopcoogi.com.
