The Hartford received a perfect rating from J.D. Power and Associates' U.S. Insurance Shopping Survey in 2012, according to Forbes. Its top rating of five circles was based on its policies, cost and customer service. Other companies fared particularly well in the same survey on specific factors. American Family was voted best for local agents, for example, and Progressive, Esurance and Nationwide were recommended for their online service.
For home insurance, the two highest-rated companies in 2015 were Amica Insurance and USAA Mutual, states Clark Howard. Howard pointed out that although they do not necessarily have the best premiums, home insurance is only for use in an emergency.
