As of 2016, good health plans are offered by well-reviewed health insurance companies that include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, Aetna and United Healthcare, says Top Ten Reviews. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association is a group of 37 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. The Association owns the brand and gives authorization to join the group. The BCBS companies provide health coverage nationwide and offer about 20 different health plans, based on location.
Throughout the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, more than 92 percent of health care providers and 96 percent of hospitals deal with BCBS companies, states Top Ten Reviews. BCBS member perks include discounts for diet programs, fitness monitors and health clubs. Humana is a reasonably priced insurance option, but it is only available in 22 states. Humana insurance plans offer features such as the reward program, 24-hour medical advice, a mobile app and guidance centers. Short-term health coverage is not available with Humana.
The U.S. Census Bureau categorizes health insurance as private coverage or government coverage, reports ConsumerAffairs. Private health insurance is coverage purchased by a person straight from an insurance agency, purchased through a union or purchased through an employer. The federal government supplies health insurance through programs such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program, individual state health plans, Medicaid and Medicare.
