Plastic clip tags, magnetic strips, RFID chips and ink tags reduce clothing theft in retail stores. Some manufacturers also embed their own customized security tag when the clothes are made. The cashier deactivates the tag upon purchase so the customer can take the clothing home without setting off an alarm.
Stores using RFID or magnetic strip tags must also install a detection system and alarm. If a shoplifter carries the item past the system's sensors or attempts to remove the tag, an alarm will sound to alert the store's security personnel. Ink tags are designed to damage the clothing instead of calling attention to the theft. If the tag is not removed properly, an ink vial will break open and stain the fabric.
