What Is a Gold Medallion Signature Guarantee?

A medallion signature guarantee, sometimes referred to as a gold medallion notarization, is a special signature guarantee required for the sale or transfer of securities. It is the issuing financial institution’s certification that a signature related to the sale or transfer is authentic, according to the American Society of Notaries.

Medallion signature guarantees are available from commercial banks, brokers, savings associations, credit unions and other financial institutions. In order to provide a medallion signature guarantee, an institution must be a member of the Securities Transfer Agents Medallion program, the Stock Exchanges Medallion Program or the New York Stock Exchange Medallion Signature Program, according to Investopedia.
