A functional resume highlights a job seeker's experience and skills instead of focusing on a chronological work history. Candidates who are new to work, who have employment gaps or who are switching careers often use functional resumes.
The top of a functional resume should provide the standard contact information: full name, mailing address, email address and a telephone number. The resume should have an objective statement listing the position sought and why the candidate is qualified.
A section highlighting skills can follow. Only skills that best match the job should be listed, with two or three supporting details on achievements or accomplishments backing up each skill. Education and certifications are placed at the end, and a list of places worked and dates can be included there as well.
