Who Founded the Fresh Market Chain?

Ray and Beverly Berry founded the Fresh Market chain in Greensboro, North Carolina, on March 8, 1982. They used their life savings to open the first store. They wanted to bring European style markets to the United States.

There are 168 Fresh Market stores in 27 states in the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, West and Northeast, as of 2015. Fresh Market stores focus on the customer and the shopping experience and carry fresh meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables. On November 5, 2010, Fresh Market started trading on NASDAQ after raising $290 million by increasing the price of their initial public offering to $22. Fresh Market has won several awards, including the 2013 Grocery Headquarters Magazine Natural and Organic Retailer of the Year.
