Forever stamps, which remain valid for mailing a 1-ounce envelope regardless of the price of stamps, are available for 49 cents each as of 2015. A proposal to increase rates in January 2015 affected the price of stamps covering additional ounces, international postage and postcard stamps.
The 2015 proposal is slated to become effective on April 26, 2015. The purpose of the increases is to help the U.S. Postal Service achieve fiscal stability while bringing some of its less profitable products into a more profitable range. While the federal government manages the USPS, it provides no tax revenues for its operational expenditures.
