Organ meats, herring, mackerel, anchovies and red meat are all bad foods to eat when one has gout or is at risk of gout, notes Mayo Clinic. These foods are all high in purines, which promote uric acid formation, increasing the risk of gout.
Scallops, lobster, shrimp, tuna and other fatty fish are also on the list of foods to avoid, as stated by Mayo Clinic. Anything with saturated fat should be cut out, as it keeps the body from getting rid of uric acid. Plant sources of protein, such as legumes and beans, contain less dietary saturated fat than meat.
Any foods that have high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener should also stay off the plate for people with gout, according to Mayo Clinic. Fructose is the only sugar that increases uric acid levels, so staying away from juice drinks and sugary soft drinks is important. 100 percent fruit juices don't appear to raise uric acid as much.
People who consume low-fat dairy products reduce their risk of gout, and staying hydrated flushes away uric acid, reports Mayo Clinic. Consuming between 64 and 128 ounces of water per day, as well as four to six cups of coffee each day for men, lowers the risk of gout.
