The first ReStore Home Improvement Thrift Store was opened in September of 1992 in Austin, Texas. It was operated, as ReStore locations are today, by Habitat For Humanity. Originally, the ReStore sold building materials only.
ReStore locations have spread to three countries, and there are now approximately 500 ReStore locations worldwide. The stores are stocked with surplus new and used building materials that are obtained by donations from individual homeowners, contractors, businesses and others. The proceeds from the sale of these supplies go toward funding Habitat For Humanity projects, including building homes for needy people. ReStores also help to keep approximately 950 tons of materials from ending up in landfills each year.
