The first National FFA convention was held in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. The first meeting was attended by 33 representatives from 18 states and was held in the Kansas City Baltimore Hotel. Leslie Applegate was elected as the first president of the organization.
The National FFA Organization is a youth organization that works throughout the United States to promote agricultural education. It is among the largest youth organizations in the country, with 610,240 members as of 2014. The organization was originally named the Future Farmers of America, but this name was changed to FFA in 1988 to reflect its growing diversification of interests. In addition to agriculture, the group now works to support youth interest in the fiber, food and natural resource industries.
