Schengen travel insurance features protection for emergency medical expenses, repatriation, theft and help in the event of death. This insurance covers people traveling to any country in the Schengen area, according to AXA Assistance. Some policies also offer an emergency helpline, along with protection in non-Schengen European Union countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland.
One of the main requirements for obtaining a Schengen visa is proving adequate travel insurance, explains AXA Assistance. The company offers three Schengen travel insurance policies. Its Low Cost policy offers basic protection that meets European regulation requirements for travel. AXA's Europe Travel policy offers more protection for travelers and their families, such as a maximum coverage of 100,000 euros for emergency medical expenses. Its Multi Trip travel insurance policy is ideal for people who make more than two trips a year. The policy covers unlimited trips for one year, with a 90-day limit per trip.
Allianz Global Assistance also offers Schengen travel insurance policies for anyone visiting Switzerland or another Schengen zone country. Its three policies provide varying levels of health care coverage, search and rescue protection, and a maximum trip duration of 185 days. The policies also cover repatriation costs for medical reasons or due to death, states Allianz Global Assistance.
