Stock markets involve a variety of participants, explains Trade King. Apart from the stock exchanges, which are also known as bourses, other participants include brokerage firms, market makers and investors. Each player has a specific role; for instance, brokerage firms such as Trade King, Charles Schwab, Scottrade, Fidelity and Options House execute transactions on behalf of their clients, while market makers furnish liquidity for select stocks and associated instruments.
Stock market investors are organized into two categories, which are institutional and retail, explains Trade King. Retail investors rely on personal resources to trade, while institutional investors act on behalf of their companies.
