What Is an Esthetician?

An esthetician is anyone who someone who works in the beauty industry, specializing in the shoulders, neck and face. Some estheticians work in spas or dermatology offices and focus mainly on skin care while others specialize in makeup application and the removal of unwanted hairs.

Estheticians are under the umbrella of skincare specialists, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average wage of one of these specialists was $32,990 a year or around $15.86 an hour. The five states that employ the most estheticians and skincare specialists as of 2013 were Texas, California, Florida, New York and Massachusetts.
