As of January of 2013, there are 23 commercial establishments in the United States that are accepting in-store payments from a customer's PayPal account wallet. Because these establishments are chain stores, this translates to approximately 18,000 brick-and-mortar stores accepting PayPal in-store payments across the U.S. alone.

The brick-and-mortar stores accepting PayPal in-store payments as of January of 2013 are Abercrombie & Fitch, J.C. Penney, Home Depot, Toys "R" Us, Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Barnes & Noble, Advance Auto Parts, Footlocker, Guitar Center, Jamba Juice, Jos. A, Bank Clothiers, Nine West, Office Depot, Rooms To Go, Tiger Direct, Famous Footwear, Dollar General, Mapco Express, RadioShack, Spartan Stores and two more additional partners.

Customers can make in-store payments using their PayPal accounts in several ways. The usual way to make in-store payments would be to enter a personal identification number provided by PayPal to authorize the purchase. PayPal subscribers can also request a card from PayPal that works just like a regular debit card.

Integrating PayPal payments in brick-and-mortar stores doesn't usually require any changes to the existing point of sale systems of the store. However, since PayPal is actively exploring other avenues to make more in-store payment systems available for its subscribers, systems like PayPal's quick response payment and the PayPal Beacon may require specialized equipment to complete the purchase.
