If your business has a bank account, has applied for a state or local license, or utilizes a payroll company, you can retrieve your Employer Identification Number from the agency of your choice. Every business entity needs to file taxes each year, and both state and federal tax returns include the Employee Identification Number. Review your tax returns to locate the number.
If you have not been able to locate the Employer Identification Number by reviewing the computer-generated notice from the IRS, contacting a bank or other agency, or reviewing your business tax returns, you may contact the IRS and request that it search for the Employer Identification Number for you. This can be done by contacting the Business & Specialty Tax Line at (800) 829-4933. In order to retrieve the number, you should have identifying information ready, and be sure that you are authorized to be given the number. Individuals who may be provided the number include sole proprietors, corporate officers and estate executors.
