The purpose of the EML file is to store email messages. It has a standard file structure that comprises of a main body and a short header and is a plain text file. The header consists of the email addresses of the sender and the recipient, the date and time of the message and the email subject. The primary message of the email is in the file body.

In addition to the text, EML files can contain attachments and hyperlinks. EML files comply with the RFC 822 standard and hence can be integrated with most of email servers, application and clients. Apart from using Microsoft Outlook Express to open EML files, the user can also use email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, IncrediMail, Microsoft Entourage, Mozilla Thunderbird or Apple Mail.

Opening and editing an EML file in a text editor such as Notepad and TextEdit is also possible just by changing the extension of the file. Changing the file format is a possibility with any email client that can open an EML file by saving the EML file into another extension.
