Applications for the Emerald Advance program were previously available at H&R Block offices, explains the company. A paystub or record of earnings, proof of residence at the address provided on the application, photo identification issued by a government office and an active Emerald Card were required before filing an application. This program provided funds for small unexpected expenses, home maintenance and other customer needs. This program is no longer offered by H&R Block, as of May 2015.

The line of credit was available throughout the year, and payment using tax refunds was accepted, explains H&R Block. Credit was available upon approval to qualified applicants. An annual fee of $45 applied, and unsecured credit was available at a 36 percent APR, with smaller rates available for secured loans. H&R Block customers may still use existing lines of credit or apply for a Emerald Prepaid Mastercard. The prepaid Mastercard may be loaded with funds and used throughout the year, without using the Emerald Advance program.
